CBD and Arthritis

January 31, 2019

First things firstYou should check with your doctor before trying CBD oil to make sure it’s safe for you and won’t negatively interact with any medications you take.

Now that we got that out of the way - let's talk

🌿Exploring CBD Oil and its Potential Benefits for Arthritis Pain

Swelling, stiffness, redness, tenderness, and frequent joint pain – these are just some of the debilitating symptoms associated with arthritis. Arthritis, in its various types, affects 31 million Americans and have them deal with joint pain, joint disease, and inflammation of the joints. Fortunately for those suffering from arthritis, more research studies are currently being conducted that explore the potential benefits that CBD or cannabidiol oil has on pain related to arthritis along with other pain-causing conditions. The good news is that, in these studies, the use of CBD oil has showed promising effects that can potentially relieve the pain of millions without the long-term ill side effects.

🌿Traditional drugs and its side effects

The use of CBD oil is backed by science and there are scientific reasons as to why it works effectively for cases like arthritis among others. The recommended treatment for arthritis usually involves traditional medicine. For instance, OA or osteoarthritis is considered a common type of arthritis that typically comes as you age and is known to be the result of the joints’ wear and tear, making it a very painful condition. Stretching, physical activities, and weight management can help ease the pain but opioids and NSAIDS or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs must be administered. Thing is, these medicines have not even been proven as effective for arthritis treatment and arthritis continues to be the top cause of adult disability in the United States.

🌿Even more bad news, the long-term use of opioids for pain alleviation can result in changes in the chemistry of the brain that eventually leads to drug tolerance. Over time, a patient experiencing chronic pain would need to increase their dose if they want long-term relief from pain. The danger however is this may also be increasing their tendency to get addicted to the drug. The same holds true for rheumatoid arthritis or RA. Long-term use of NSAIDS can result in stroke, heart attack, and other serious side effects.

🌿Evidence-based effects of CBD oil on arthritis pain

This is where CBD oil comes to the rescue as it has shown a huge potential to be a more natural and safer approach towards the treatment of chronic pain. Today, you do not have to exclusively rely on medications that may bring with them fatal consequences. Specifically, Sativex is a cannabis-based mouth spray that is approved in the U.K. It contains CBD which is an anti-inflammatory cannabis compound with none of the euphoric effects. Together with THC or delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, the use of Sativex has shown significant analgesic effects in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. In 2005, a placebo-controlled study was conducted and a group of patients with RA were administered with 2.5 mg of CBD and 2.7mg of THC using a mouth spray. An assessment was then made of their pain in motion and at rest; sleep quality; and morning stiffness. After 5 weeks, use of Sativex was shown to reduce inflammation and improve pain significantly.

More studies are still required but these encouraging results revealed how an evening dosing regimen can prove to be beneficial especially in minimizing the possibility of intoxication-type reactions. Evidently, there is a better solution to arthritis management where CBD oil renders a natural and safer remedy with its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

🌿CBD oil potential benefits:

As mentioned earlier, research on CBD oil benefits on chronic pain continues to this day. In 2016, an animal study was conducted and the results revealed that a topical application of CBD has potential for therapeutic relief for inflammation and pain-related behaviors without the usual side effects associated with arthritis medications. And in 2017, osteoarthritis in rats was also studied showing how CBD can be a safer remedy for treating OA pain and likewise as a useful remedy as a prophylaxis. Finally, it implies how treatment with CBD actually prevented later pain development and nerve damage.
